This picture, Young Boy, Herat, Afghanistan, by photographer Richard McGuire shows a young boy with a grubby shirt, and captures the universal essence of childhood. This picture was taken in Afghanistan in 1977 just before the conflict broke out, which has lasted several decades in various forms.
