Orpheus, the son of Oeagrus and Calliope Lived in Thrace at the period of the Argonauts, Whom he accompanied on their expedition. Presented with the lyre by Apollo and instructed by the Muses in its use, be enchanted with its music. Not only the wild beasts but the trees and rocks upon Olympus so that they moved from their places to follow the sound of his music. He aided the Argonauts miraculously with his harp.

He had married a nymph named Eurydice, but lost her by the bite of a serpant. He followed her into the abode of Hades, where the charms of his lyre suspended the torments of the damned and was near winning her back from the most inecorable of the deities; but his prayer had been granted upon this one condition, that he hould not look back upon his restored wife till they had arrived in the upper world.

At the very moment when they were about to pass the fatal bounds, the anxiety of love overcame the poet; and he looked round to see Eurydice was following him and he beheld her caught back into the infernal regoins.

His greif for her loss led him to treat the Thracian Women with Contempt, who in revenge tore him to pieces under the excitment of their Bacchanalian orgies, Such is the story as told by Plato.

What is an Ethching/ Photogravure?

It is a type of etching- which is first a picture or scetch of a painting or other object taken on a sensitive film, a negative is than produced and or prepared and laid on or engraved into a sensitized metal plate, which is then developed and bitten with a mordant producing a plate that may be printed from.

Such a plate has no sharp incised lines like a plate used for the steel engravings, but rather minute photgravure is a testament to the skill of the artisans of the time...

I have many Ethchings/ PhotoGravures up for sale all Originals- No Repo's for the serious collectors and or Art Lovers or for just that perfect gift.
