OSTEOPATHY ![]() Andrew Taylor Still (August 6, 1828 - December 12, 1917) is considered the father of osteopathy. His research and clinical observations led him to believe that the musculoskeletal system played a vital role in health and disease and that the body contained all of the elements needed to maintain health if properly stimulated. Still believed that by correcting problems in the body's structure, through the use of manual techniques now known as osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM), the body's ability to function and to heal itself could be greatly improved. He also promoted the idea of preventive medicine and endorsed the philosophy that physicians should focus on treating the whole patient, rather than just the disease. He became so skilled at reducing fractures, he became known as the "lightening bone setter". In Australia, an osteopath is university trained, government registered, and undertakes a 5-year, University Masters degree to achieve registration. Osteopaths collectively treat over 30,000 people a week, and osteopathy has been practiced for over 100 years and a registered profession in Australia for the last 30 years. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Book 1 - The Philosophy and Mechanical Principles of Osteopathy written by Andrew Taylor Still in 1902 is 320 pages in length. "This work is written for the student of osteopathy; written to assist him to think before he acts, to reason for and hunt the cause in all cases before he treats; for on his ability to find the cause depends his success in relieving and curing the afflicted... What is osteopathy? It is a scientific knowledge of anatomy and physiology in the hands of a person of intelligence and skill, who can apply that knowledge to the use of man when sick or wounded by strains, shocks, falls, or mechanical derangement or injury of any kind to the body... Osteopathy means a knowledge of the anatomy of the head, face, neck, thorax, abdomen, pelvis, and limbs, and a knowledge why health prevails in all cases of perfect normality of all parts of the body. Osteopathy means a studious application of the best mental talents at the command of the man or woman that would hold a place in the profession." Book 2 - Osteopathy Illustrated: A Drugless System of Healing by A.P. Davis is 860 pages in length, with many illustrations and was written in 1899. "Unobstructed circulation of fluids to and from the heart, in all parts of the body, and uniting the forces and removing the pressure, constitute the basic principles of this philosophy, and the means of promoting these ends is the only object of this book. Disease, according to the common acceptation of the term, being only the product of impeded circulation, the desideratum in all of the manipulations, moves and adjustments shown, illustrated and explained in this work, will be conceded by the careful reader who desires to know. There is no secret, arcane abstruseness aimed at, but the practical uses and results of the science to ameliorate suffering humanity, to set free what is and has been bound..." Book 3 - A Textbook: The Principles Of Osteopathy, by G.D. Hullet in 1922, is 177 pages in length. "This book has been held in favor by members of the osteopathic profession for twenty years. This new edition, the fifth, has been prepared for publication at the request of the American Osteopathic Association and the Associated Colleges of Osteopathy. The following excerpt from the preface of the first edition indicates the author's viewpoint: "It must be understood at the outset that the work is designed primarily for the student who is beginning to study the new method of healing." Book 4 - The Practice and Applied Therapeutics of Osteopathy, by Charles Hazzard written in 1905 has 440 pages. "In preparing the second edition for press, much care has been taken to make the work a complete text-book upon the subject of Practice of Osteopathy, and to make it thoroughly osteopathic throughout... The treatment of each disease is discussed at some length. Much thought must be devoted by the successful practitioner to his method of handling his case. In each case the various points of treatment applicable are pointed out." Book 5 - Anatomy In A Nutshell: A Treatise on Human Anatomy in its Relation to Osteopathy, by William Ross Laughlin written in 1905 has over 600 pages and 290 illustrations. "The original book of one hundred and fifty pages has been revised and enlarged to over six hundred pages, but the name Anatomy in a Nut Shell is retained, because any book of six hundred pages covering such an inexhaustible subject as human anatomy would be a Nut Shell indeed. The entire work is given in lessons so that each day the student has some thing definite to do. In presenting the subject of anatomy to the student, we first teach a few rules and fundamental principles to give him a working knowledge of the subject, and then we take up the work complete as it comes in the human body. For instance in teaching the anatomy of the arm we take the clavicle, giving its ossification, articulations, attachment of muscles and blood supply. Then the origin and insertion with action, blood supply and nerve supply of these muscles. So it is with every bone of the upper extremity and the entire body." ![]() ![]() ![]() These Five Classics Now On One CD! The eBooks are in Pdf format on CD and are NOT hard copies.
