SHORT HISTORY
The English Leicester originated in England in 1755 and arrived in Australia in 1826, spreading rapidly throughout the southern mainland and Tasmania. They were very much in demand to produce a meaty carcase and a heavy fleece ideally suited to the needs of the new colony. It is now a rare, heritage breed.
Breeders consider the English Leicester as a true dual purpose sheep - the meat, both lamb and mutton is fine grained and tasty with a minimum of fat, and the wool factor is so inportant as well.
A unique type of lustrous wool is grown to a length of 10 inches (25.5cm) in 12 months. The wool has a beautiful showy crimp, with the locks 1/2 to 1 inch (1.5 to 2.5cm in width and is much sought after by spinners, weavers, knitters and craftspeople as it is easily scoured, takes up dye readily and retains its lustre after these processes. Fibre diameter is 32-38 micron with a high decree of electicity which enables garments to retain their shape
