The Performance Chip & How It Works

The performance chip is a sophisticated software communication chip used to deliver specified data to the engine via the engine management system.  It has been programmed specifically to improve the overall performance of your car.  Targeted areas of improvement are:

• Driveability
• Dramatically improved throttle response / acceleration

The chip works by changing the program in the chip which is housed in the engine management system or engine control unit (ECU).  This is done using GENUINE Holden Delco software and GENUINE Holden memcals, more commonly known as chips.  Large amounts of data have been programmed to control ignition timing and fuel delivery has been modified to be more precise, allowing the engine to operate more efficiently at optimum levels.  Our performance chips also include Holden updates and service updates for even further benefits.

Each one of our performance chips are written specifically to the model of the car and the requirements of the buyer.  We are also able to program for either increased power or increased fuel economy upon request.

The performance gains will also vary between models and will most certainly be dependent on the condition of the engine as well as the type of fuel used.  Our power gain estimate is about 15-20 kws using standard fuel and about an extra 2% using premium fuel.  Again some models could experience higher gains.

A major benefit of the performance chip at the moment would have to be the IMPROVED FUEL ECONOMY.  Economy gains will vary between models and will be dependent on engine condition however our conservative estimate would be about 30-40km extra to a full tank.  Some models could even experience up to 100km.  This will be especially prevalent during highway driving.  Whether it be 40km or 100km, the improved fuel delivery and quantity to be had by the installation of the performance chip does mean that EVERYONE can expect to benefit from the fuel savings.

To ensure the attainment of maximum gains achievable we recommend the use of the following:

• a good quality, free flowing exhaust system
• a cold air intake (see our other auctions)
• premium fuel

 The use of premium fuel in the current economic climate should not be cause for concern.  The vastly improved engine efficiency created by the chip combined with the further improvements gained by the use of premium fuel itself will far outweigh the cost of the fuel.

For the purposes of this auction we state an average estimated power gain and we try to remain conservative.  We recommend that buyers be aware that a performance chip is not a fix for a tired engine and that all gains will be relative to the condition of your engine and quality.

Greater short term power gains can also be achieved by adding excessive ignition timing to the chip program and leaning off fuel.  WE WILL NOT DO THIS.  These sorts of modifications will add extra pressure and stress to your engine management system and engine and will eventually exert damage to your engine cause by the creation of higher combustion temperatures and pre-ignition (pinging).  Our performance chip will bring out the maximum power of your engine without destroying it.  We are not here to make a quick dollar from you without thought for the consequences and we recommend that buyers always be wary of overstated power gains.  They usually are too good to be true.

Q:    Will this work with LPG?

A:      We actually have a range of chips written to suit LPG and dual fuel.  Please

          check our other items for sale or send us a message.

Q.:     Will it damage my engine?

A.:        No, because we do not perform excessive adjustments to the program.  Our

chips are 100% safe.

Q.:     Is the chip legal?

A.:        The performance chip is completely street legal and will not alter roadworthy

            or insurance conditions.

Q.:     How hard is it to fit?  Can I install myself?

A.:        Yes you can.  The performance chip is a straight plug in to the ECU. 

            Installation of the performance chip is simply a matter of locating the ECU,

removing the cover, unplugging your current standard chip and replacing it

with your performance chip.  We estimate that even the inexperienced will take no longer than 10 – 15 minutes to install.

Q.:     Why is it so cheap?

A.:        We only sell our chips online so we are not trying to cover our overheads.

WARNING:

When making the decision to purchase performance chip for your car we recommend that you carefully consider your options.  We recommend that you be wary of:

The mod chip – this is simply a cheaply priced, small resistor fitted to a temperature sensor in order to trick the system into thinking that it has a lower? Engine temperature than it really does.  In turn the engine management system makes adjustments to the fuel system accordingly.  In most cases this adjustment is to richen the system or to lean it.  This is a cheap and nasty shortcut, it does not work correctly and is dangerous to your engine.  Buyers should not trust any modification that tricks the engine management system rather than programming the parameters correctly.

The eprom – these are cheap IC units that are available in any hobby store.  An eprom is recognisable as it comes without a carrier or a cover and needs to be re-soldered into your standard chip. They are reflashed using mostly copied programs that are freely available to download from the internet.   In most cases these are copied programs that are generic to a wide range of models rather then being specifically programmed to suit a particular model.  As one chip does not suit a wide range of models but must be programmed specifically according to the model, we recommend that buyers again be careful if planning to make such a purchase. If a seller is selling many eproms for many different makes/models then you can be fairly certain these are the copied programs to which we are referring.  The cost and difficulty of de-soldering your current eprom and ther re-soldering the new eprom will usually end up costing more than to simply buy a custom performance chip and plug it in.  One must also consider that the risk of damage to your car's computer by installing the eprom is very high.  Buyers will naturally find that the stated power gains will not be achieved.  In short, buyers will get what they pay for - very little or  even worse, costly repair bills down the track.

Overstated power gains -  Be wary of sellers offering inflated power gains and high figures to dazzle you. There is still a limit to what the performance chip can do. Greater gains than those stated by us can only be achieved by carrying out internal engine modifications at, of course, a much higher cost.

An effective way to ascertain the credibility of a seller and the quality of their product would be to ask specific questions.  We suggest questions like whether the seller can program to a specific requirement such as switching off the body control module, or whether the seller can convert an auto program to a manual.  Be specific to your model.  If you do not receive well-informed, detailed and correct answers then tread carefully.  In this field the basic rule of thumb really is that you will get what you pay for.

This Performance Chip is NOT suitable for:

• Engines where major internal modifications have been carried out e.g. cams, cylinder head modifications or change of injectors
• Supercharged or turbo engines with the exception of the factory supercharged VS (providing it uses standard boost)

If your car has any of the above examples then we recommend that you have a performance chip programmed at real time on a dyno.  This is the only way to ensure that your performance chip is programmed correctly to work efficiently with and optimise your modifications.  While our performance chip will still operate and make some improvements to your car, it will not be completely correct.  For this reason we do not feel it is ethical to supply under these circumstances.  Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions.
