Replica cast of Mayan hieroglyphic panel excavated from the El Quiche ruins of Utatlan in Guatamala, about 16 miles north of Tikal.

Originally the post-Classic Maya city of K'umarcaaj, Utatlan was the ancient capital of the Quiché region and is mentioned in the Popol Vuh. Utatlán is the Nahuatl language name for the city, which means "the place of reed houses." The oldest of the Maya cities, it is believed this is where the Maya consolidated their culture, where their writing system was perfected and where their calendar began.

The oldest Mayan stela amongst the ruins is dated to 328 BC. Discovered in 1916, it bloomed during the Classic Period and was overtaken by the Spanish Conquistadores in 1524. Still considered a sacred site by modern Maya it's not uncommon to find them still performing rituals there.

The majority of our replicas are hand-made, cast in non-toxic Hydrostone, an imported stone composite material which is harder, more durable and realistic than plaster or plastic. Items are hand-finished to duplicate the original artifact as closely as possible and individually checked for quality-control.
