PARROT PITCHER PLANT
GENUS SARRACENIA PSITTACINA

Sarracenia psittacina, commonly known as the Parrot Pitcher plant is a small plant that usually keeps its pitchers tightly against the ground in a flat, prostrate rosette. The pitcher tubes are horizontal. The pitcher mouth is no longer a large, gaping hole. Instead, the pitcher lid is dramatically modified, and the pitcher mouth is transmogrified into a tunnel allowing access to a large, roughly globose chamber. Once an insect crawls into the pitcher, the exit path is hard to return to. Meanwhile, the horizontal pitcher tube seems to promise escape but is actually a one-way trip into an increasingly narrow tube with hairs that prohibit escape.

The entire plant is brightly pigmented to attract prey. To help encourage prey to wander into the trap, the globose pitcher top is adorned with light-transmitting fenestrations. Also, the pitcher ala is expanded into a large, vertical wall that directs crawling insects into the trap opening.

Since the trapping system is so different from other Sarracenia, this plant is considered a "lobster pot" carnivore instead of a pitfall trap. This kind of trap would function even if submerged, and since the plant may be submerged during floods it is often suggested that it functions as an aquatic hunter during such times.

The flower is usually small and red, but green-flowering and yellow-flowering clones are known.

In the wild, S. psittacina occurs in Georgia; the Florida panhandle; and the Gulf Coast from Alabama and Mississippi to a small area of far eastern Louisiana

The tried and true way of germinating Sarracenia seed is to cold stratify the seed for 4 weeks. Storing the seed dry in the refrigerator isn't stratification. Stratification is storing the seed in a cold and damp environment usually with natural materials that may aid the process of convincing the seed it is time to start growing. The easiest method is to refrigerate seeds in a small plastic bag with a few strands of finely chopped sphagnum moss dampened with purified water. Live sphagnum is the best choice. The moss should be wet enough so that if you squeeze it you will see water but there shouldn't be any free water in the bag. If you don't have live or dried sphagnum moss and must use peatmoss, get it very wet then squeeze it to remove most of the water and make sure there is plenty of air in the plastic bag. The seeds need air. The seeds could die if the peatmoss is too wet. You may want to soak seed for a day before you stratify them. Put the seeds in a small dish of purified water and a tiny touch of dish detergent.

This auction is for 15 fresh seed. Item shipped by ordinary mail upon receipt of clear funds. Postage cost of 60 cents. ***Save 50% postage & handling on additional lots that are combined for shipment.

As always our seed is fresh & professionally cleaned to give you the very best germination rate.

All lots come with propagation notes.

Feel free to email us with any queries.

Happy bidding
