John Anderson's childhood was marked by tragedy - his mother losing her battle with cancer, his father struggling to raise his children alone while bearing the scars of World War II, and the accidental death of his sister in a backyard game of cricket, an event that shook John's self-confidence for ever.  He experienced the joy of staring a family himself, only to face further sadness when his youngest son was born with insurmountable health problems and passed away at just six months of age.  And he faced his own chronic health condition, which had doctors recommending he quit politics almost as soon as his career had begun.
