The authors have assumed that persons using this book will be engaged at the time of study in some form of dramatic production. We recommend that learning is best when it takes place in an experiental setting. These learning experiences may be related to full-scale production of one-act or three-act plays, ot they may be simple workshop experiences set up in the classroom environment. In addition to being designed for cast members of plays, the book is also intended to provide a comprehensive reference for directors. Even inexperienced directors can become fairly com- petent producers by giving the text a careful study. If directors will spend some time making models of sets, pract- icing with make-up, reading many plays, and making maximum use of expertise of others, the quality of plays will quickly improve. This book has been designed to cover all major aspects of play production from careful play selection to artistically and finan- cilly successful performances. Although the chapters in the text follow each other logically, they can be used independantly. Resource materials, bibli- ography. and workshop activites have been indicated at the end of each chapter.
This makes it a valuable and valued resource for actors, directors and Drama teachers.
