Jewellery you can wear throughout your pregnancy to prevent loss of your piercing!

The jewellery bar is made of a flexible, plastic-like substance called 'PTFE'.  

PTFE is Polytetrafluoroethylene (a substance that is used to medically produce some heart valves).

The advantages of a PTFE bar for pregnancy are:

·    It is very flexible, more comfortable and able to bend with the movements of your belly (and the movements of your baby underneath).

·      It reduces the shock to your belly if you catch your piercing on anything.

·     The piercing is more likely to heal faster, because the fluids produced by your body do not 'stick' to PTFE like they do to metals. This increases healing times.

·     It is also less likely to cause an allergic reaction of the skin.

·     It does not conduct heat like metal does. Therefore it will not cause heat damage to the piercing if exposed to the sun.

·    The bars are fully adjustable to suit your belly, because the PTFE can be cut to size with a pair of scissors.

The bar is a 1.6mm (US size 14) standard gauge, with stainless steel balls holding an amber stone at each end.  The bar can be cut to a shorter length and then rethread for the perfect fit as desired - and will mean you can keep on wearing your body jewellery throughout your pregnancy - for sonograms, scans and dopplers and during labour!

Why do I need maternity body jewellery?

As your bump gets bigger during pregnancy, your navel piercing stretches with your bump and also becomes straighter. If you leave in your usual metal belly bar, the skin will become pinched, tight and uncomfortable, and may tear, which can lead to scarring and/or infection. The same can happen with nipple rings during pregnancy. In the past, before maternity body jewellery was available, it was usually necessary for pregnant ladies to remove their belly or nipple rings during the later stages of pregnancy, and then go through the cost, pain and inconvenience of re-piercing after their baby was born - fortunately this is no longer the case.

As you progress through your pregnancy you will find that you need a straighter bar, therefore you need to use maternity body jewellery that can go from curved to straight (and vice versa for after your baby is born, as you regain your shape).
