Interested in becoming a RADIO broadcaster? This licence may be just what you're looking for. You could soon be on the air and having an impact on the local community where the licence is located. Yes, there are rules to follow. You need to be broadcasting content that is 'niche' format - NARROWCASTING as it is known.

You could try a tourist information service, or school-based educational radio, ethnic language service, Smooth Jazz or Country Music ONLY format, or a religion-based format. You can also use the licence to cover special events in the local area.

The signal should cover up to about 5 Km radius, perhaps more when listening in a car - enough to cover a modest-sized country town quite nicely.

There is no guarantee you can get permission to locate broadcasting equipment at the present licence address - ie You may HAVE to move it to start broadcasting (ask a question to find out!).  You can relocate the licence to a new site within 10Km of its present address, provided the new site does not clash with existing LPON services and frequencies.

LICENCE COSTS - LP-FM or LPONs as they are called in Australia are initially issued by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).  The fees for a licence approved by ACMA are as follows:

Application lodgement fee = $300
Licence approved fee  = $250 or $1000 or $2000 depending on the category of the location [Low Density or Medium Density (Adelaide, Perth) or High Density (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane)]
Licence annual fee = $34
Total cost of new LPON = $584 in a low-density area, which covers most of Australia.

ACMA sometimes hold auctions for LPON licences and lists the results on its website.  The LPONs that have been won at auction since 2005 are listed by town with their winning prices below:

Springfield (QLD - 8000 pop.) = $5100
Seymour (VIC - 6200 pop.) = $2050
Launceston (TAS 60,000 pop.) = $7500
Ballarat (VIC - 65,000+ pop.) = $6000
Mareeba (QLD - 7000 pop.) = $3900
Millicent (SA - 5000 pop.) = $4050
Melton (VIC - 30,000 pop.) = $5100
Gawler (SA - 16,000 pop.) = $7600
Sale (VIC - 13,000 pop.) = $7050

This gives you some idea of the likely value of an LPON on the open market.  Those closer to Capital cities and larger population centres are clearly worth more in most cases.

Remember: LPONs have a 'Use-it-or-lose-it' regulation which stipulates that a licence cannot be hoarded.  It must be activated within six months of the issue date unless there are extenuating circumstances that have prevented getting it on the air.  Transferring ownership is NOT one of those circumstances, but relocating is.

The link above to a MAP also shows other licences that MAY be listed on eBay shortly!!  Bookmark PANOB Enterprises as an eBay favourite to keep tabs on new licences listed for sale.

This is how the process of purchasing this licence works.  The highest bidder above my reserve price will win the licence (obviously!).  As soon is payment is completed, the owner will initiate a transfer of ownership by completing the ACMA transfer form and posting it to the new owner to sign and post on to ACMA. The winning bidder, as the new licence owner, will pay the $41 ACMA admin fee for ownership transfer. Within a few weeks, you will be issued with a new LP-FM radio licence for that town.  Simple!  Accepted payment methods are outlined below.

NOTE 1:  Some licences listed on eBay are NOT the property of PANOB Enterprises.  In such cases, the licence owner has agreed to list the licence for sale under the PANOB Enterprises banner.  In such cases where there is no scan of the actual licence document, you will normally find a link to the actual listing on the ACMA database for that licence.  In accordance with eBay rules, a prospective purchaser is advised not to communicate directly with the owner of the listed licence.  All questions about the licence should be directed to PANOB Enterprises.

NOTE 2:  There are NO POSTAGE COSTS involved in this transaction.  I will post the form to you once your payment has been received.  All other correspondence will be by email.

P.S.  The photos are of actual LPON installations, but they are samples only > EQUIPMENT IS NOT INCLUDED AT ALL!
