Victorian - Mid 1800's
Large Marble Statue
Newspaper Boy
-*-
An impressive and very beautiful, antique Victorian marble statue, which would date from around the mid 1800's.
This charming statue is of solid Victorian marble and looks to be in almost original condition. From the subject matter and period, I would think that this statue is probably of English origins.
This statue is quite large and marble statues of this size and age are very hard to come by.
The statue depicts a young boy dressed in Victorian era garb, barefoot, with newspapers under left arm and right arm and hand up to his mouth while he yells "Paper paper, read all about it". These words used to be yelled across many city streets in the 1800's and many a young boy made a penny selling newspapers.
The sharpness and attention to detail of this statue is amazing. It has been carved with great skill and with a great eye for detail (hair; teeth; dimple to chin; slightly ragged clothing with sleeves rolled up and bare calves and feet; newspapers).
This statue is quite large and has great presence. It is large enough to stand on the floor on display, or it can stand on a large pillar to provide extra height - either way displayed, the statue is quite intriguing. It is breathtaking.
This statue would be valued at many thousands of dollars and we have been advised by a couple of southern auctions houses that we could expect to 'fetch' up to $4,000 at public auction for it.
This is a statue which could be displayed in the foyer of a newspaper house or business, or, it could just be amazing in somebody's home. We have had it displayed in our home both standing on the floor and also on a timber pillar. This is a rare opportunity to own such a piece as this.
Dimensions
Height - 810mm (2’ 7 7/8")
Diameter of base - 275mm (10 3/4")
Weight (approx) - 50kgs
Condition
Overall this stateu is in very good condition. The statue does have some small age cracking to the marble (typical for marble of this age) and there is a very small repair to the front right side base (all visible in the photographs). We have been advised all these issues could be professionally repaired by a marble craftsman. This statue presents superbly. Please view the photographs which form part of the description.
This is a rarely available large marble statue of a charming subject, from the Victorian era. As already said, it is a statue which could be displayed in the foyer of a newspaper house or business, or, it could just be amazing in somebody's home. This is a rare opportunity to own a piece such as this.
