This
is a rare set of delightful sterling silver knives dating from 1912.
They are top quality, marked on one side with the maker's initials, which appear to
be JY. Next is the crown for Sheffield, the lion passant, and then a
date mark which is a Gothic lower case u or v for 1912, probably. The maker in Sheffield was Yates Brothers, who worked
from 1910 to 1922. On the other side of the knife is again the lion passant and the date mark. I have included a few close-up photographs of the hall marks. They have lovely, shaped handles, in what is almost a Georgian style, and although quite small and delicate, probably for fruit, are beautifully proportioned and balanced in weight. Very simple lines suited to modern living. They are 17 cms long. As you can see they are in excellent condition in the original purple velvet and cream silk lined box.
