This is an EXCELLENT opportunity for someone to acquire a WONDERFUL example of a HIGH QUALITY hand-finished SOLID 14K GOLD Timepiece of the mid-20th Century, following the finest watchmaking traditions ~ by the ELGIN Watch Co. TRIPLE-SIGNED (Case, Dial & Movement). They produced some very high quality pieces, and as expected, the workmanship of this piece is quality throughout, and easily comparable in quality to what top firms were producing during the period.
It is, indeed, a very Beautiful piece of Time, Jewelry & History. Nicely proportioned, this fine wrist timepiece measures, 28mm (1 1/8") tall, 16mm (about 5/8) wide, and only 7mm (just over 1/4") thick, including the Crystal. It weighs 0.4 ounces (12 grams). It Is, certainly, a FABULOUS surviving timepiece, that would have been considered quite a luxurious piece in its day ~ very DESIRABLE in the White GOLD!
Produced during the mid-20th century, this genuine timepiece (about as nice a SET as you will find in this vintage), is an outstanding example of true master craftsmanship, by the famous & historic American, Elgin Watch Co.
Elgin was in fact the largest American Watch company in terms of production, and made about half of the total number of American Pocket Watches. The Elgin National Watch Co. was formed in August 1864. The factory site was in Elgin, Illinois, where the city had donated 35 acres of land. The factory was completed in 1866, and the first movement made & sold was the 18 Size B.W. Raymond model in April 1867. In that first year of production about 9,000 watches were made.
The company went on, of course, to become highly successful and over the next hundred years produced well over 55 MILLION WATCHES!
When this piece was made it would have been considered one of the better quality timepieces of this SPECIAL White Gold DESIGN; produced by the firm during the mid- 20th century and still echoing design elements of the artistic ART DECO period.
The High Quality, ORIGINAL, 8 – SIDED, Snap-On Back Case, is signed ELGIN and HALLMARKED, 14K GOLD, for 14K (NOT gold-filled) SOLID GOLD. The inside of the Case is also stamped with the case makers trademark, as well as the case serial number.
This SPECIAL, High Quality GOLD Case is still in EXCELLENT condition throughout, and is still a wonderful piece to see and hold; especially given its age. It has no dents or problems of any sort that I could see, and still looks FABULOUS, having survived for so many years and still SHINES BRIGHTLY.
The Case is obviously well designed, and features TWELVE Genuine, Brilliant Cut DIAMONDS. There are 10 surrounding the Watch Face, on the Bezel, and one set into each Case Lug.
The Case Back is smooth finished, and has NOT been initialed, nor has the watch been personalized in any way.
This type of ORNATE design is COMPLEX, less common, and very beautiful in its execution. I have tried to provide some good photos, but really it can only be fully appreciated in person. HIGHLY COLLECTABLE! It has excellent proportions and balance, and a very nice feel of GOLD in the hand.
This level, and degree of specialized craftsmanship of SOLID WHITE GOLD & DIAMONDS in watchcases is becoming a lost art, and this is a fine example of the craft demonstrated at its best ~ RARE TO FIND A WATCH FROM THIS EARLY PERIOD WITH THE ORIGINAL GOLD CASE REMAINING IN SUCH FINE CONDITION !
The expandable, Genuine Speidel, U.S.A, watch band, that comes with it as shown, is in EXCELLENT Condition, and looks great on the watch. You should be able to get a good idea of the condition and quality of this Wonderful Case from the images below. It is difficult to photograph Gold (it's so shiny), and any wavy lines or distortions/shadows you may see are from the camera/light reflections, and not actually on the Watch itself. I have tried to provide good images, including the front, back, and inside of the Watch & Special Box.
The next FINE aspect of the Watch is the condition of its ORIGINAL Signed Dial. The handcrafted, Silvered Metal Dial is in good condition, and remains very legible. It has NOT been refinished (which is preferred by collectors) and only shows some typical light wear. The Diamond Studded, front bezel, has what looks to be the original crystal, which only has a few light marks. Overall, it is quite an achievement to have survived as well as it has, especially for the vintage. The Dial is fronted by a wonderful set of White Gold Hands, which look to be all ORIGINAL to the piece.
It is also a testament to the complete ORIGINALITY of the piece that the DIAL is properly signed at center, LADY ELGIN.
The FABULOUSLY Hand Finished, Three-Quarter Plate, High Quality NICKEL, FULLY SIGNED & FULLY (17) JEWELED Movement with going barrel is ORIGINAL, and is obviously very well crafted. Still in STRONG RUNNING condition, it is a true testament to the high degree of quality and craftsmanship that it is still fully operational after all these years! Although there are no guarantees with such a vintage timepiece, it has been RUNNING VERY WELL here, for a full winding (and KEEPING TIME!) IT SHOULD BE READY TO WIND AND WEAR!
I am offering this wonderful, highly collectable, Early Genuine (TRIPLE-SIGNED) American WATCH & BOX from the HISTORIC ELGIN FIRM with a VERY LOW RESERVE.
The Watch is stem wound & set by the textured CROWN which still works properly. The High Performance, (Grade 875) ELGIN Movement is equipped with an excellent example and top execution of the High Grade, FULLY JEWELED, high precision LEVER escapement. Complete with a Polished Steel club tooth escape wheel. The LEVER itself is of the high performance forked design, and carries JEWELED PALLET STONES.
The roller table supports a JEWELED, impulse/unlocking pin, and mates to a High Grade MONO-METALLIC BALANCE WHEEL. This in itself is yet another fine feature, and sign of higher quality, as many Watches have a plain balance. The evenly pulsing hairspring is finely adjusted by a POLISHED STEEL regulator. It is clearly signed, ELGIN, 875, SEVENTEEN 17 JEWELS ~ a truly beautiful and performance grade movement!
At the time this piece was made, such Watches were machine made, but still designed and finished by hand, therefore, more rare and collectable ~ especially fine examples, from this period, with the ORIGINAL SIGNED Dial, and housed in the ORIGINAL, Signed & SOLID 14K GOLD Hallmarked, Genuine White Gold Case – a Wonderful Highly COLLECTABLE Piece, along with a FABULOUS BOX!
Overall, this is a BEAUTIFUL, Vintage example of a finely crafted (with Solid GOLD & Real DIAMONDS) Timepiece of the period. Although not a purely original set, the box is for a Lady Elgin watch, which is what it properly houses. If you are a collector, have an interest in Vintage Watches, or Solid GOLD Jewelry, this presents an example, from well regarded Historic Firm, that not only looks CLASSIC, but has survived so well, and still in STRONG RUNNING CONDITION & WEARABLE to this day.
