**** RARE UNITED STATES MEDAL OF FREEDOM - ORDER ****

Authorized on July 6, 1945, and amended on April 3, 1953 the Medal of Freedom is awarded to any person who, on or after December 7, 1941, has aided the United States in war against an enemy, or has furthered the intrust of the United States security or that of an ally during a national emergency. It is not awarded to a member of the United States Armed Forces.

This medal is awarded to citizens and members of the Armed Forces of foreign nations in four degrees, corresponding to certain American military decorations. Three degrees are in the form of palms to be worm on the suspension ribbon. They are: Gold Palm; Silver Palm; Bronze Palm and the fourth degree is without the Palm. Citizens of the United States are only awarded the medal without the palm. It has not been awarded since 1963.

The medal was re-established by a similar name only, as America's highest Civilian Order by President John F. Kennedy on 22nd February 1963, named  The Presidential Medal of Freedom a beautiful large enameled Order that hangs from a blue Commander type neck ribbon. The Medal of Freedom on auction is not to be confused with the extremely rare Presidential Medal of Freedom which is only awarded by the President of the United States, as this Commander Order is worth around $40,000.USD, and awarded for something entirely different to that of the Medal of Freedom.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest current awarded civil honour a President can bestow. The award recognizes outstanding individuals who have been leaders in their chosen fields, have led lives of vision and character, and have made especially meritorious contributions to our nation and the world.
