A family who lose their way in the mountains of New Mexico and crash their car and are rescued by Ben, a Vietnam veteran, who leads them through a blizzard to safety in a cave in a deep canyon, but at temperatures approaching 40 degrees below they wonder for how long. A light aircraft crashes nearby and Ben goes to investigate but the pilot is dead but he brings the pilot's girlfriend to the cave. The pilot is a state senator and the family were travelling to stay with a powerful oil tycoon and soon a rescue operation is mounted whilst the blizzard worsens.
