Before the development of cheap printing and photography, the approved images of royalty (on coins, medals and portraits) reinforced the idea of an inviolable ruling caste, surrounded by impeccably dressed courtiers. From the late eighteenth century onwards, however, information about royal figures became much more widely available. In the present century, with the reduced importance of couoriters and the increased emphasis on royal personalities, film, TV and newspapers have placed high expectations upon these apparently familiar but remote figures.
