A Biographical Sketch

Sidney Nolan once said: "In the only sense that matters, Tassy Drysdale is the most genuinely Australian of all of us."

On another occasion Daryl Lindsay, artist and Director of the National Gallery of Victoria, said to Drysdale when they were present at a large gathering of Australian artists, "You know, Tas, you and I are the only blokes here who would be able to cope with a mob of bullocks."

Yet, paradoxically, George Russell Drysdale the greatest painter of the Australian outback and the bush people and Aborigines, and a man who worked for many years on the land, was in fact born in Surrey, England and lived for most of his adult life as an artist in Melbourne and Sydney. However, although he spent all those years in cities, he never really looked like a city person.
