DRYSDALE DRAWINGS
Limited Edition - No. 1126 of 1500 March, 1981
Russell Drysdale's gifts as a draughtsman was recognized from the start and they have remained central to any understanding and appreciation of his art. Brief, sketchy and fragmentary as the drawings from time to time are, they nonetheless carry the full personality of the artist. His breadth of human sympathies and interest, and the refinement and distinction of his pictorial sensibility, are met equally throughout the drawings. From his earliest days as a student of George Bell - very much the case where the pupil proved to be the master - through his maturing vision of the 1940s to the gallery of outback tupes of more recent years, Drysdale's drawings catch the essential timbre of is art.\ The drawings of the 1930s, so well represented in the exhibition, are particularly fascinating when he boxes his way through a vareity of manners, some adapted from the School of Paris, others stemming from more local stimuli such as Ian Fairweather and Drysdale's own contemporary, Peter Purves Smith. There is a constancy through manners. When drawing his figure compositions of life class nudes, Drysdale's interest in charcter asserts itself. The body is interesting because it has a personality.
