1889 Australian gold sovereign, Queen Victoria
Jubilee portrait, St George reverse, normal JEB / legend 2, Melbourne mint, (Michael Marsh catalogue
number 133).
Highly attractive uncirculated condition, original lustre
both sides, well struck, with excellent surfaces and rims. Some microscopic
surface marks, as seems inevitable from bulk handling at the mint, but mostly
confined to the obverse. Now quite rare this good.
This coin was acquired at the November 2005 auction in Melbourne, Australia,
of the gold holdings of the Reserve Bank of Australia
and comes in the original Reserve Bank packaging of Downies Coin Auctions Australia. Thus
has historic significance and strong investment potential.
Composition 91.67% gold, 8.33% copper. Size 21.5 mm. Weight
7.988 grams (22 carat 916.6 fine). Pure gold content .2354 ounces.
