Rare Antique Buddhist Manuscript in Pali with Box

In India and Southeast Asia Buddhist scriptures known as sutras have been recorded on palm leaves and slivers of bamboo for over 2000 years. The leaves of the bai-lan tree were trimmed, flattened and polished smooth with sand. They were recorded in Pali, most famous as the language in which the scriptures of Theravada Buddhism (also known as the Pali Canon or in Pali the Tipitaka) were written down in Sri Lanka in the 1^st century BC. It is a tradition that continues today in some parts of Asia. Pali has been written in a variety of scripts and here appears in Burmese, a distinctly circular script.

This book contains over 100 pages and is about 100 years old making a beautiful physical record of the celebrated teachings of the Buddha. This manuscript is from a text called Pathikavagga-atthakatha, which is a commentary upon the Digha-nikaya  (long discourses of the Buddha).

The book is now housed in a wooden box with glass panels; something that we have never seen before. The box has been decorated with traditional Burmese folk art designs in gold paint. There is some superficial wear to the surface of the panels of the box but otherwise it is in good condition and without repairs. The pages have retained their gold gild edge and remain in excellent condition with all pages in tact and just a little weathering of the edges. The Kammavaca pages catch the light passing through the glass panels, reflecting the gold edge of the pages.
