Stunning "Sleigh Leg" 3 Piece Lounge Suite from our favourite Mid Century furniture maker "Don Rex" of Brisbane, QLD. Hard to find the armchairs and a little bit harder to find the sofa, but to see them together and in such extremely good condition is certainly a rarity. So stylish and very Danish in design with strong influences from Hans Wegner & Finn Juhl (please check www.roxyklassik.dk and you'll find that this local suite is one of the best). Solid timber frame of old growth Qld Maple that has the qualities & looks of Teak. This was a premier timber for furniture back in the 50's, 60's & 70's, but getting difficult to get nowadays. Witness the sculptured frames and condition of these chairs. They should be in a museum for their timeless quality and superb condition.
We particularly like the timber backing of solid Maple which support the back of the sofa. Very stylish yet sturdy and have certainly stood the test of time. We've recovered this suite with one of the top fabrics similar to the period from the Wortley Group in Victoria. It really suits the dark honey color of the Maple to a "T". The foam and dust covers are now new and the frames have all been oiled & buffed.
The "Classics" that they reissue now or the "Replicas" that come from China, cannot duplicate this suite - it just costs too much time & money! To have this suite duplicated here in Australia now would cost in excess of $5,000! That is why most lounges today are all covered with upholstery as all the inferior timber can be hidden. There are very few lounges with top timbers anymore that would make them last a few lifetimes. This one is built like an M1 tank!
Excellent condition for its age just showing extremely minor blemishes & bumps. About 8.9/10. This lounge suite is a one-of-a-kind and will really add that special touch & class to your space. Why spend money on furniture that would be worthless in just a few years when you can invest in quality upcoming Antiques like this item! Try getting one of these in Newfarm/Paddington, St Kilda/Toorak or Surry Hills/Newtown & see what you'll pay for it. Definitely not under $2000.
