Rare Danish Style "Don Rex" Blackbean Dining Suite with 6 (six) Rattan/Blackbean side chairs and Blackbean extension table. This suite must be one of the rarest in Queensland, let alone in the country as we've never sold one before nor have we seen too many on eBay as a dining suite. We know that Fler, Chiswell and possibly Noblett had produced rattan backed dining chairs but from what we've seen, they are not in the same league as these babies. Crikey, just check out the sheen in the vinyl seats!
The very sleek, smartly trimmed and clean angles of these chairs are just a joy to behold. They almost have an athletic look about them, taut, lean and and ready for action. The rattan back is immaculate, super comfortable and timeless in it's modernistic lines. Simple yet so practical, especially in Queensland's humid climate or those hot Sydney summers.
The Blackbean table is another rare sight. The minimalist design is so contemporaneous and yet this table is over 35+ years old! Most of the timber tables we see in the big stores are big, bulky and quite traditional. In many ways, we've gone backward in styling when it comes to timber furniture! Why we equate size and bulkiness with style and quality perplexes me. This table is indeed a credit to Don Rex and it's designers for creating an item that is very sleek and equal to most Danish tables in this category. There are many great vintage tables about but this certainly has to be one of the best currently on the market as the pictures show. When it's extension leaves are open, it is 2.40cm long which makes it one of the longest extension tables of it's kind on the market. Parker tables in this category are just 2.13m long. This table will not disappoint! This type of minimalist, sleek design is just superb from any angle and will remain so for years to come.
To have this dining suite duplicated now in Australia would cost a small fortune. Lovely dark Walnut color of Blackbean that is so hard to find nowadays. Blackbean will always be rare as it was not as mainstream as Teak or Blackwood. Condition now is about 8.6/10 as there are almost no defects that we can discern except vintage wear. Should last another 50+ years with care. At $250 per chair and $995 for the table, we feel that the price is reasonable considering what you can buy now in any of the big stores, most of which carry items made in China and priced in excess of what this vintage suite is asking for. In fact, to have this suite duplicated now would cost a small fortune. We've asked around!
