About the sculptures |
|
This is an original sculpture and is 'one of a kind', it was hand sculpted, starting with a lump of clay I shape and mould the clay to create a form, for larger pieces the clay is moulded around scrunched up paper and a hole is made in the base, (the paper burns out during firing leaving a hollow piece), I keep adding clay to create the desired shape, the piece then has to dry which takes 1-2 weeks depending on its size and the weather, when it is dry it is hand painted and fired twice in my kiln (1st firing 1280 deg C or 2336 deg F which causes the clay to 'vitrify' (become glasslike) and beautiful porcelain is formed, the second firing is to add the protective glaze which leaves a lovely glossy finish. No moulds were used to make this little sculpture and as such there will never be another identical piece
Note: as this is a completely hand made piece please expect that there may be minor imperfections

About the Artist
Anita Reay (That's me) Sculpting clay is my passion which allows me to tap into my imagination and is a never ending journey of discovery and learning. I am a self taught artist and have been into many forms of art since childhood. I have always had the ability to draw animals and birds well. Although only recently discovering the joy of sculpting in porcelain clay, as a child I sculptured birds and animals from air dry clay, for many years my artistic abilities were put on 'the back burner' while I raised a family and worked full time, only discovering I still had my sculpting talent after buying a block of porcelain clay in 2005 'just for something to do'. After creating a menagerie of birds and animals including owls, kookaburras, dogs and ponies my family convinced me to buy a kiln, which I did and consider it the best purchase I ever made, and after discovering my art was appealing to others I began sculpting full time. The nature of my work lies with the whimsical and the figurative. I only create original sculptures so that each collector has the only 'one of its kind'. My sculptures may follow a theme but no two are ever identical. Nothing pleases me more than when I see someone look at my work and smile. I am still always overwhelmed by the fact that people like my art enough to want to own it.
NB: People often ask how to pronounce my surname, it's pronounced Ray (the e is silent) |
