for the Red Gate Players presenting Chinese Shadow Plays. 

one yellow brochure describing the shadow plays... the "puppets," the art.  great condition.  creased from folding.  stamp on back from Lee Ruttle Associates, Publicity Consultants in San Francisco.

one handbill for performances at the Marines' Memorial Theatre.  in San Francisco for play called the White Snake Lady.  dialogue and music by Pauline Benton and Arvo Wirta.

the other side of the handbill is ad for the Chinese press-- a bilingual publication (Chinese & English)... with order form.

Pauline Benton (1898-1974) started and ran the Red Gate Players.  They performed Chinese Shadow Plays using intricate puppets... really quite stunning.  The theatre troupe ran from about the late 1930s until 1960ish.  wow.  if you're interested, I suggest googling for more info.  Many of the surviving puppets are in a collection named for her in New York? at the Chinese Theatre Works.

oh and these are probably from the mid 1940s... because it mentions wartime travel.
