GENUS SYZIGIUM LUEHMANII

Syzygium luehmannii, commonly known as Riberry or small leafed is a rainforest species that can reach 30 metres in its natural rain forest setting in northern New South Wales and Queensland. It will grow to a more manageable 6 to 8 metres in height in cultivation. It is one of the most popular and sought after of all the lilly pilly because of its attractive form and habit and its prized edible fruit.

It has a naturally attractive vertical form with the added ability to take heavy pruning and shaping making it a spectacular hedging subject. The small glossy deep green leaves are augmented red to pink new growth. Showy and attractive fluffy white flowers are seen in spring and summer and make a good floral showing. The small pear-shaped fruits in shades of luminescent pink and red appear in late summer and while adding to the showiness are better known as one of the very best of the bush foods. The fruit can be used in a variety of ways. They are enjoyed in fruit salads, fruit crumbles, in sauces and jams and are increasingly cooked and prepared by restaurants.

This very attractive ornamental shrub tree is extensively cultivated for commercial production of Riberry

This species takes full sun or part shade and can be grown over a wide area of tropical and sub-tropical Australia and in cooler areas including Sydney and Melbourne if given some protection. Small plants will require some frost protection in cooler locations. It likes fertile well-drained acidic soils It grows happily in containers and is great as a hedging or screening plant.
