"Illustrated by the incomparable Robert Ingpen, author of 'The Voyage of the Poppy-Kettle' and winner of the Hans Christian Anderson Medal for illustration. He here presents the story of Gnomes in Australia, their habitat and culture..."

"Marjorie Wood introduced me to gnomes, giants, and their other world. She lived in Kent
Cottage, a rambling old house next to my childhood home in Geelong. Our house was very
modern for the 1930s but it stood in what had been the old orchard of Kent Cottage. It was
shaded by three great oak trees, and under Marj Wood's guiding spirit these trees could
instantly become Spanish galleons, fortified castles, circus tents, and submarines. They were
for me the scaffolding to fantasy-land.

Marjorie was a photographer, a water colourist, a dreamer, and the owner of a thieving
ageless cat called Modestine. But most of all she was a storyteller. My childhood was filled
with her fantasy, her celebration of the art of making the unreal a positive reality, her
pretence of being a kindly witch, and her conviction that Jenny Green-Teeth, Belladona Snagglefang, and countless others would live
forever. I think it is probable that she invented the incredible Lertograph.

The world of Marj Wood seems long ago now, but the influence remains. I continue to believe
in gnomes and cannot imagine a place where gnomes have not been, or have not influenced, or
do not visit during their long and busy round of activities.

This book is an introduction to some of the gnomes that I know about. My meeting in Tasmania
with a strange gnome called Theresa Green is my most direct source of information about the
current situation of Australian gnomes. I hope that what I have written about her colleagues
of the gnome world does not reveal too many secrets..."
