Presented here for your consideration is a HUGE Royal Doulton Coaching Days Series York Sandwich Tray. Please Note: this is the large sized tray it is not just a sandwich plate – this is one of the largest size pieces available in this pattern – it is massive. The Coaching Days series was designed by Victor Venner, it was introduced in 1905 and extended until 1929 and it had been withdrawn by 1955.

Attached to my Nicholnack art in pottery web site I have created a Coaching Days Fact file regarding this series, in this fact file I show the 24 unique scenes associated with the series. This is the first scene; “Coach being harnessed, attendant bringing up a pair of horses”. It bears the green stamped under glaze makers’ that was introduced in 1932. The pattern number D2716 is written on the base by hand in green ink.

Dimensions

This HUGE tray measures a mighty 45.5 cm (18”) across the handles and it is 19.4 cm (7.65”) wide.

Condition

It is in EXCELLENT used condition; with NO chips, cracks, stains or repairs. There is one tiny scratch only, it is a line below the horses attached to the carriage – nothing really – I only mention for complete accuracy. As is most often the way with production of this style and vintage it does exhibit crazing – nothing hideous – but enough to impart a delightful antique patina.

This magical tray has lived the life of an artwork. Coaching Days is one of the most popular of Royal Doulton’s series ware motifs. These MASSIVE trays just don’t come along every day, this is a very large and a very collectable piece.
