Presented for consideration is a PRISTINE Royal Doulton Rex Mug featuring the character “Mr Micawber” from the “Dickens Ware” series. The scene depicts “Mr Micawber” - from Dickens’ novel David Copperfield - in the foreground with a very Victorian street scene in the background.

The Dickens Ware series was first introduced in 1908, modified in 1912, 1917 and 1931. In 1951 a new pattern number was introduced D.6327, but production was reduced to a trickle of three or four shapes, by the late 1950’s it had stoped altogether. Attached to my Nicholnack art in pottery website is my Dickens Ware Fact-file, I show all the scenes available in this series in several colour-ways - with dating information - also see the Doulton Shape Fact-files for compressive range of shapes.

The scène on this Mug was drawn by Royal Doultons’ art director C.J. Noke, so it bears this great mans signature. This delight has the black stamped under glaze maker’s mark and a black stamped Dickens Ware maker’s mark, this mark incorporates the characters name and the pattern number D.6327. This pattern number was issued in 1951 and this mug would date from that time.

Dimensions

The mug measures 12 cm (4.75”) across the top including the handle and it stands 12 cm (4.75”) tall.

Condition

It is in AS NEW condition; with NO chips, cracks, stains or repairs and NO crazing. This is exactly as it was the day it came out of the kiln when it was brand spanking new nigh on 70 years ago.
