Presented here for consideration is a Royal Doulton York Sandwich plate featuring the character “Alfred Jingle” from “Dickens Ware” series. The scene depicts Alfred Jingle - the rascally actor from Dickens’ first novel Pickwick Papers - standing in the foreground with a very Victorian Town scene in the background. The Dickens Ware serries was first introduced in 1908, modified in 1912, 1917 and 1931. By 1951 production of Dickens Ware had all but ceased except for the odd rack plate.

It has the black stamped under glaze maker’s mark and a black stamped Dickens Ware maker’s mark, this mark incorporates the characters name. Written by hand in blue ink is the pattern number "D.5175". The production date code 6-34: June 1964 is impressed into the base. The shape code 7781 is also impressed into the base.

Dimensions

It measures 28 cm (11”) across the handles and it is 12.5 cm (5”) wide.

Condition

It is in EXCELLENT condition; there are no chips cracks, stains or repairs, but as is so often the case with production of this style and vintage it does exhibit light crazing.
