Cuban Royal Palm

Some people say the royal palm is probably the most beautiful palm in the world. Truly an aristocrat of the plant world, the Cuban Royal Palm makes a memorable impression wherever it is grown.

They are generally fast growing and although tropical, the royal palm can survive in sub - tropical areas, and can grow to around 26 metres tall. There is a huge bright green crown shaft and a crown of large feathery leaves. The trunk is light grey to white and distinctly ringed with leaf base scars. It has at least one slightly swollen point along its trunk and then bulges again below the crown shaft, and the base is enlarged. 20cm long leaflets are arranged in rows along the 3metre length of bright green pinnate leaves. Composed of 15 - 20 leaves, the canopy sits atop the crown shaft - a smooth, glossy extension of the trunk composed of the overlapping bases of the leaves.

The Royal Palms are not fussy about soil but prefer a rich well-drained soil, and can tolerate dry spells if well mulched. The Cuban Royal Palms have high light requirements, preferring bright sunny conditions. They like regular and adequate watering, and a tropical or near tropical climate. They can also tolerate short cold spells. Do not plant in the shade, as they need full sun. They are also tolerant of salt, so they are well suited near salt water and the beach. In full sun and with plenty of water, they can add up to 1 foot of trunk per year.

They look best if planted in clusters of three of more, preferably of varying heights. They look great planted in avenues or as a single specimen. They can be suitable for containers for indoor use, but only until they grow too big.
