SYNOPSIS: Her pride and passion kindled burning    dreams... and the love of one man.

Through turbulant Civil War America, she fought for freedom... and the promise of love.

With a spirited mix of Yankee pride and a fiery independence that was all her own, Sarah MacKenzie vowed never to marry – and pledged herself to the blazing issues of the day. The champion of mill workers and a fierce opponent of slavery, she speaks her mind as well as any man. But when she meets Philip Calvert, as proud and mysterious as his native South, she discovers a desire she has never known. More, she sees in him a kindred spirit, united in the belief that no man should be the slave of another. But only in the face of cataclysmic war does Sarah discover her true courage as a woman, and the awesome power of love.

Extract:

SARAH'S GAZE FELL TO HIS MOUTH

His lower lip was somewhat fuller than the upper. Both were firm and strong. Unconsciously the top of her tongue darted out to moisten her own lips, which had suddenly gone dry.

"Don't," Philip murmured. His hands touched her shoulders. His mouth was warm and coaxing on hers, easing Sarah through the first shock of such intimacy until she began to relax. Only then did his arms go around her, drawing her into his embrace. Through the fine linen of his shirt, she felt for the first time the hardness of a male body so different from her own. Fascination robber her of the will to resist. With a soft moan, she melted against him.
