Synopsis:
Ever since the Spanish first undertook voyages of discovery in the Pacific, men have wondered when the far flung Polynesian Islands were settled and where the original settlers came from. In 1941, Thor Heyerdahl put forward his thesis based in personal observation that the settlers had arrived in two distinct waves. The first of these waves, he argued, came from the East, from South America; the second wave had its origins in Asia and reached Polynesia by following the prevailing winds and currents, which first brought it to the coast of British Colombia.
This thesis by the enthusiastic young Norwegian zoologist was rejected by experts, who maintain that the South American Indians’ rafts and reed boats could never have compassed such enormous distances. Heyerdahl’s reply was to prove them wrong with the famous Kon-Tiki expedition, risking his life in the process. His popular account of this voyage has since appeared in 57b languages and his Oscar-winning film of the expedition has been televised throughout the world.
One result of the furore wrought by Kon-Tiki, however, was that many scholars bitterly opposed the all too successful outsider, and personal attacks and insinuations followed. Nor did this opposition end when Heyerdahl’s archaeological expeditions (financed largely from profits of his books) succeeded in proving beyond all reasonable doubt the presence of Indians on a number of islands in the East Pacific in early times. Despite the many marks of recognition and honours he has since received, Heyerdahl’s findings are still regarded more critically than those of any other living scholar. It is for this reason that a selection of his essays and lectures is now presented as a book, giving in an immensely readable and lucid from Heyerdahl’s scientific aims and the most important discoveries of his colleagues. Readers who derived interest and pleasure from “The Kon-Tiki Expedition” will learn how the theory underlying that expedition has since been enlarged and developed. From his essays we receive a fascinating picture of a warm hearted and likeable personality, whose endeavours in the scientific sphere have also been a kind of adventure
