Title: "Silent Emergence" ARTIST'S STATEMENT This surreal image is part of a series of a personal journey of rediscovery. There comes a time in life when to move forward and grow you need to face your own inner demons, past fears & insecurities, thus redefining your self image and worth. The image was created during that time in my life. As a small child I absorbed words around me as literal. To hear adult conversation and particularly the female bonding ritual of gossiping was confusing. I observed that words and emotions change according to the participants who are present, thus I figured that to save myself from being the gossip topic I needed to remain silent and non-committed. I imposed on myself a rule of silence, seen but not heard. Fuelled by shyness this became an easy rule to live by. This image is bold and has a message to say. It is one of a series that screams out for those willing to hear. The character and the textural quality of the image surface is inspired from memories and dream. Most dreams offer insights from your subconscious but fade quickly from memory. As a middle aged adult with my own family I have vivid memories of a specific dream from childhood. This image is from a series which explores the particular dream, not as the child I was at the time but as the adult I now am. The original dream had me trapped in my parents bedroom filled with giant cardboard boxes, I was a small child and I was isolated and trapped. Frightened and alone I could not find my way out of the room nor through the towering walls of the boxes. So I screamed for help, literally. My dream-scream was so loud it woke me up, and parents, who came running into my bedroom to see what the problem was. My mother had emphasised on many occasions that people who said they had nightmares didn’t know what they were talking about, and that they had not!. Emotional from the dream and panicky for an answer to her questioning on why I screamed I lied that I simply wanted a biscuit. I remember being made to sit in the kitchen in the middle of the night to eat it. I was not very old at the time and as an adult looking back on the incident, it is sad to realise that through a lack of communication and fear, I could not admit such things as dreams and nightmares even existed. Growing up as a very shy child who should be seen and not heard, I never mentioned my hopes, dreams, fears, insecurities or hardly even an original opinion and as an adult I still find verbal communication uncomfortable. This image is from a series that is now very symbolic of my adult boxes inherited from childhood. Whether these are self imposed restrictions or my fundamental personality type the series explores the inner depths of who I am. Trapped inside yourself. Opinion silenced in fear, As distorting words swirl. A life of silent mistrust. Screams safely echo Through silence of empty crates. The rule is silence Continuing never broken Neveeerrrr… till now! Pain floods forth to cleanse a soul. The hollow shell crumbles and falls, reborn with strength of love and acceptance.
