The language of gesture is happening all the time around us silently; it is not always conspicuous, but none the less it is eloquent and meaningful. Ideas and emotions, thoughts and feelings can be transmitted in this way. Gesture is more than a kind of sign-talk; it also serves as an important adjunct to the spoken word. Thus gesture, gesticulation, facial and bodily movements of expression accompany the act of talking and serve to emphasize the content of what is said. Indeed evidence from developmental and comparative linguistics suggests that gesture may represent a fundamental aspect of language with origins more distant perhaps than verbalization. Gesture, however, has developed along lines of its own. It has established its own partilcular art-form, namelay miming, pantomime and dance. Gestures have become incorporated within the more eoteric aspects of religion, so as to constitute an elaborate ritual of symbology. In like manner, certain gestures have passed into the common currency of workaday usage, as in the case of the military salute and the handshake. In a number of varied and interesting circumstances wherein speech is either totally or partly in abeyance, systems of sign-language have evolved which may be utilized to the total exclusion of the spoken word.
Drawing upon all this material and augmenting his themes with illustrations taken from life, archaeology, art-history and advertising, Dr Macdonald Critchley demonstrated that gesture should be regarded as a non-verbal but very important modality of language, remote in its beginnings and with great powers of enriching and enhancing our communicative potential.
