Hallmarked Sheffield 1902

Description

This is a superb antique magnifying glass with a gorgeous mother of pearl handle and silver collar. It is hallmarked for Sheffield 1902 and is by the silversmiths William Hutton and Sons.  It has a new lens so it is perfectly ready to use - the surround to the lens is stainless steel. This would grace any room in the house and is very functional for many applications. This would make a wonderful Christmas present. yester*year  will be listing more fabulous items shortly.

Interesting Facts & Trivia:

·        The firm of William Hutton and Sons was established in Birmingham in 1800 by William Hutton, and was transferred to Sheffield in 1832. After the founder's death the business was continued under the style of William Hutton by his son William Carr Hutton. The firm was transformed in William Hutton & Sons in 1864 and William Hutton & Sons Ltd from 1893 to 1930. In 1930 goodwill transferred to James Dixon & Sons Ltd.

·        The earliest evidence of "a magnifying device, a convex lens forming a magnified image," dates back to the Book of Optics published by Alhazen in 1021.
