SILVER SAW PALMETTO PALM (Serenoa repens) 10 seeds

Serenoa repens, known as the Silver Saw Palmetto Palm, is a small shrubby palm that is native to southern USA.

Saw Palmetto is a small hardy fan palm whose stem usually remains below ground or runs just along the surface. In some cases, it develops an erect or arching trunk that may lift the whorl of leaves 0.6-2.4 metres above ground.

The palmate leaves are 0.6-0.9 metres across and silver or bluish-grey in colour as opposed to the more common form that has green leaves. The cluster of leaves gets about 1.2-1.8 metres high with a similar spread. In the wild, saw palmetto often grows in clumps 6 metres or more in diameter. The petioles (leaf stems) are about 60cm long and sharply saw-toothed.

The fruits are round, black when ripe and about 2.5cm in diameter.

Serenoa is an attractive plant and is becoming more and more popular as a robust and reliable ornamental. Over the last few years there has also been enormous medical interest in this palm, as a prostate medicine is made from its fruits. Probably billions of fruits are annually collected from the wild for this purpose, making them more difficult to come by for horticulture.

Prefers full sun, but can tolerate partial sun. Tolerates drought but can also tolerate moist soils. Is quite frost hardy. Makes a great container plant.
