Notes: I have witnessed 55degC produced at 7:30 am midwinter in Beijing in an air temp of minus 11degC. These solar collectors are not terribly fussy as they work well with diffused light (eg cloudy days, between tall buildings). In china it is common to bolt them onto a vertical surface such as a balcony . As the tubes are round they automatically track the sun.
The tubes consist of two large test tubes made of toughened borosilicate glass. One inside the other with a vacuum between. One is coated with dark blue crystals (Al-N/Al) that convert light energy into heat which is captured by the foil then conducted to the copper bulb. This bulb conducts the heat into the water. The standalone pump is better at pushing than pulling so down and close to the tank is its preference. The pump and controller are 240v and the pump draws only 46 watts on speed I. The 3/4 nipple at the bottom and the 1/2 hot from solar pipe both go in the hole in the tank. When the pump is running the hot is pushed into the tank and cold will be pushed out to the panel through the space between the 1/2 pipe and 3/4 fittings. When a hot tap is turned on the cold mains pushes in through the same 3/4 space without disturbing any solar water.
When the temp sensor at T1 is sufficiently hotter than T2 at tank bottom the controller switches on the pump. When the T1 feels cool water again it switches off the pump. Cutout thermostat only keeps the pump from turning on when the storage tank water is hot enough.
The panel is 165cm x 200cm. It has 20 x 190cm x 58mm diameter tubes. Assembled, it weighs 64kg.
Additional panels are available separately.
It has been found in practise that one panel connected to a tank of around 315 litres will save an "average" family of fairly careful hot water users around 80% of their hot water bill.
As a rough guide this unit will on average in Hobart increase about 100 litres by approx 40degC per day; Sydney about 120 litres; and Brisbane approx 135 litres x 40degC per day.
