DESCRIPTION:
Just can't resist a band whose dedication to pure primtive black metal is summed up by their dictum of "worship Satan and cut your veins", which is printed across the inside of the thick booklet that comes with The Abhorred Blessings. The corpse-painted goons in Somrak debuted with this full length album in 2007, an eight song blast of old school black metal primitivism from the Slovenian horde, one of the few Slovenian black metal bands that I've heard, actually. Not that that means anything, because Somrak sound more like they hail from Norway circa-1991 with a sound that's heavilly influenced by second wave black metal bands like Darkthrone, Immortal and early Enslaved. It's raw, icy blackthrash that mixes together the early blackened thrash metal of Celtic Frost and the cult black metal violence of Darkthrone, with a vocalist who growls and mewls through a litany of deep throaty chanting and ghoulish croaks that's reminiscent of Attila Csihar. It's a ritualistic approach to classic BM, sticking pretty close to their influences but occasionally throwing in an interesting twist of their own, like the raging black n roll parts that erupt every once in a while, some somewhat complex guitar parts or the dissonant, Deathspell-esque riffing that shows up in songs like "Banished Into The Void". Pretty cool and definitely grim to the core, Somrak deliver a fierce blackened assault that totally gives me my fix for atavistic galloping black metal, complete with over the top satanic imagery and lyrics. Fans of Fluisterwoud, Cult Of Daath, Mayhem, Root and Sardonic Wrath era Darkthrone should give em a listen.
