Agatized fossil Coral ...

The Petoskey Stone is a six-sided fossil Coral (Hexagonaria percarinata) found along the beaches of northern Michigan
The primary mineral that makes up the fossil Petoskey Stone is
Calcite Limestone.
The stones were formed as a result of glaciation, in which sheets of glacial ice plucked the coral from the bedrock,
grinded off their rough edges and deposited them in the northwestern portion of Michigan's lower peninsula near the area of Petoskey.

In 1965, Petoskey was named the state stone of Michigan ...
the name coming from an Ottawa Indian Chief, Chief Pet-O-Sega.
