Ananda Marga and the Hilton Bombing.
This is the definitive account of one of the most notorious miscarriages of justice in Australian history, the story of how perjury and prejudice sent three innocent men to gaol for seven years.
The case involved a pathologically disturbed informer, vital tape recordings and documents not produced at the trial, false evidence concealed through unjustified claims of Crown privilege, 'verbals', ASIO and the New South Wales Police Special Branch.
The Hilton hotel bombing in Sydney in February 1978 killed three people and began a terrorist scare.
The Ananda Marga organisation was the prime suspect.
Four months later three members of Ananda Marga were arrested and charged with planning another bombing. The case rested heavily on the evidence of Richard Seary, who was recruited by the New South Wales Police Special Branch to infiltrate the Ananda Marga after the Hilton bombing.
The three were released only after a special Inquiry in 1985. Seary was proved at this Inquiry to be an extravagant liar and fantasist, and to have once tried to persuade members of another group to do a bombing.
Some suspect that Seary himself is the Hilton bomber.
