STODDART Mr Andrew Ernest. 'A big hitter'. In flannels. Bat. Pads. Gloves. Born 1863. Son of a colliery owner in Durham. Joined the Hampstead Club from which he progressed to play for England. Also captained England at Rugger. By STUFF.

The magazine was Founded & Edited by Thomas Gibson BOWLES.
From 1868 to 1914 Vanity Fair caricatures both lampooned and praised eminent Victorian and Edwardian Politicians, Sportsmen, Lawyers, Judges, Royalty and other famous 'Men of the Day'

ABOUT THE ARTIST: 'SPY'

The best known of the many famous artists employed by Bowles was Leslie Ward (1851-1922), who signed his works as Spy, and whose caricatures account for well over half of those featured in Vanity Fair.

So famous have these fabulous prints become, that Vanity Fair caricatures today often are referred to and recognised immediately simply as Spy Cartoons.
