Item Description: Greddy style SR20 oil sump pan to fit any SR20 equipped S13 Silvia, 180sx, S14 and S15 200sx! This awesome winged oil sump is designed to be a direct replacement for the in-efficient, dangerous and very delicate factory sump. The internal baffle assembly as seen in the below diagrams, is a crucial element which helps the oil stays centered inside the oil pan during hard cornering. In addition to this, the Greddy design bolt on trap-doors control oil movement throughout the sump, as they work together to keep the centre section full of oil, right under the oil pick-up where it is needed. They are designed so that the doors can only open towards the centre of the sump where the oil pickup lies. When cornering, the oil pan and it's trap doors do all the work for you, and ensure that the centre oil pick up is always full of oil, which is far superior than the standard oil sump. Small gaps exist around the edges of the trapdoors, this is designed to allow slower movement of oil to keep the capacity of all three sections level when not loaded up with G-force. Draining the engine oil from this sump is just as easy as the factory sump. You simply undo the plug bolt and let the oil drain. Furthermore, there is an additional second hole that will accept a temperature sensor for an oil temp gauge. This makes installation of an oil temp gauge that much easier. How much of a difference will this SR20 Oil Pan kit make? As the years and kilometres pile on to all the SR20 motors, we seem to be seeing more and more engine failures due to bearings. A bearing really only fails one way, and that is through oil supply (contaimination or starvation). Contamination comes down to regular servicing, but starvation can happen to even the most maintained engine. With the stock sump, there is a serious risk of oil starvation due to the oil moving away from the pickup under situations with extreme g-forces. Simply, hard cornering can lead to oil surge = starvation and this will always will result in engine failure. In addition to reducing oil surge, this aftermarket sump has great cooling benefits. Primarily, the greater the volume of oil present, the further the thermal load is spread. This means that the introduction of the extra volume of oil, will lower oil temperature considerably, by dispersing the heat over a greater amount of liquid mass. Further to this, the ridges found on the sump not only strenghen the sump, they act as heat sinks to cool the sump and the oil within the sump. This oil sump helps by reducing oil temperatures and ensures that the oil pick-up is not starved of oil during hard cornering. All this helps increase your engines longeivity and helps keep your motor fully lubricated at all times. A great feature of the oil pan are the trap doors, which force the oil to stay centered right underneath the oil pick up at all times. This oil pan is a must have investment for streeters, drifters, drag and circuit racers.
How does this oil Pan work? The way the sump works in ingenious and solves a very common problem which has previously killed many SR20 engines. As you will see below, our baffled and trap-doored oil pan is superior in so many ways compared to the standard oil pan. See below for a comparison example: Standard Oil Sump Pan: As you can see with the standard sump, during hard cornering, the oil in the sump pan can shift dramatically and this can result in oil surge which can kill engines. As lateral G-forces are applied to the oil in the sump, it moves heavily to one side and collects against the outer sump wall. The oil pickup then may not be fully submerged and a drop in oil pressure occurs, and this is the point where your bearings and motor is put at risk.
Our Oil Sump Pan: This high capacity sump solves two very crucial problems of the standard oil sump. Firstly, the baffles in our sump incorperate a trap-door design, allowing the oil to move into the path of the oil pickup, but not move away from it. Combined with the extra capacity of the sump, our oil sump pan virtually eliminates any chances of oil starvation. When cornering, the capacity of the outer wing of the oil pan stays much the same since very little oil transfer is allowed. As the trapdoors only open inwards, the opposite wing of the oil pan has donated most of its oil volume to the centre section by way of the now own trapdoor staying open. So now the centre section's oil volume is increased when it needs it most. If the forces were suddenly to be reversed then the trapdoor that was previously closed would open and send its oil into the centre section, leaving an even greater volume of oil in this area. Therefore quick side to side cornering will only increase the available oil to the pickup. After a short amount of time oil transfer between the three sections will stabilise thanks to the small passages available even when the trapdoors are closed.
Many people are unaware of the severe risk you take by drifting your Nissan SR20 without one of these sumps. I personally have seen first hand on about 3 occasions now (including my very own 180sx while drifitng at winton), motors that have spun bottom end bearings, due to oil starvation of the oil pick up within the standard sump.
