Steersman™ Steering Guard

Sticky or Frozen Boat Steering is
dangerous and expensive.

Over the years, boaters generally encounter a variety of steering problems, some just nuisances and others requiring a great deal of expensive repair.
The difficulties start with the steering rod and tilt-tube, the standard steering arrangement on outboards and I-O’s. Every time the motor is turned, the steering rod is exposed to contaminants such as water, salt, sand and fuel. These can then enter the steering tilt-tube and work their way into the cable.
locked up frozen cable
This corrosive mixture then attacks the tilt-tube area and cable, eventually causing a locked up or “frozen” steering system. The cure for frozen steering is to replace the cable. This is a difficult job and can cost $500 or more.

Steersman ™ Steering Guard
Until the patented Steersman™ Steering Guard, there was no reliable method of getting lubrication into the tilt-tube section of the steering system and keeping it there.
Steersman ™ Steering Guard

An Innovation in Steering. And Here’s Why.

The Steersman™ is a stainless steel (for salt water environments) or anodized aluminum (for fresh water conditions) nut with its own grease fitting and O-ring seal. The Steersman is machined from solid stainless steel or aluminum. It both cleans and protects the steering system by keeping lubrication in and corrosive elements out.

It installs simply by disengaging the tiller arm, removing the locking nut from the end of the tilt-tube, replacing the nut with the Steersman™ Steering Guard and then reconnecting the tiller arm.

F.A.Q. (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q. Which Steersman is right for my boat?
A. There are four different Steersman Steering Guards: 7/8" and 1" ID thread sizes in anodized aluminum and stainless steel.

To determine which is right for your boat, all you need to do is answer two simple questions.
1. What brand of outboard motor do you have?
If your answer is anything other than Mercury or Mariner, the size you need is 7/8" and you can proceed to question 2.
The large 1”-14 thread Steersman fits Mercury and Mariner 3, 4 and 6 cylinder outboards. Mercury and Mariner 2 cylinder outboards should take the 7/8" size. To confirm, if a section of the tilt tube is exposed, you may be able to measure the threads O.D. using a micrometer or even a crescent (adjustable) wrench.
2. What kind of water do you operate your boat in?
If you are boating in fresh water all the time you can use either the anodized aluminum or stainless steel Steersman.
If you ever take your boat into salt water or brackish water, we recommend the stainless steel Steersman.

Q. Why doesn't the Steersman come packaged with oil?
A. The manufacturers of boat steering cables recommend grease to lubricate marine steering cables. Please see question below.

Q. What kind of grease should I use?
A. The manufacturers of boat steering cables recommend a waterproof marine lithium-based grease. It is easily applied through the Steersman's grease fitting using a standard grease gun.

Q. Does a Steersman ever wear out?
A. The Steersman should easily last the life of your outboard, but with many years of use, the O-ring can wear out. If you start to see grease streaking on your steering rod, just remove the Steersman and replace the O-ring.
Mail us a self-addressed stamped envelope and we'll send you a couple O-rings FREE OF CHARGE.

Q. I bought something like this before and the rubber wiper quickly popped out, making a big greasy mess.
A. Unlike some imitations on the market, the Steersman uses a replacable O-ring that is held securely in a groove. While properly installed, it simply cannot come out, but can easily be replaced when worn if the Steersman is removed from the outboard. (see question above).
