50 Stinging Nettle Seeds

(Urtica dioica)

A  perennial  growing to 1 metre in summer and dying down to the ground in winter.  The root system is wide spreading.  Stinging nettle is abundant  throughout Northern Europe. 

Stinging nettle has defensive hairs (needles) which are very sharp and break off when they penetrate the skin.  The sting will burn and then will be come itchy.

Nettle has many uses.  It has been used in herbal medicines since ancient times. 

 

A highly nutritious soup can be made from the leaves.  The leaves are a good source of calcium and iron.  By crushing or chopping the leaves the stinging hairs are disabled.

Young leaves and flowers can be used as a herbal tea.

The stalks can be used as flax fibre.

Organic growers use nettle against mildews, fungus, aphids and as a liquid manure. 

Nettle likes a rich, moist soil, and will tolerate shade.
