Returned from retirement for the second time in his career, posting 19 points (7-21 FG, 5-6 FT), six assists, five rebounds and four steals in 37 minutes to tip off the regular season at New York on 10/30/01, Michael Jordan led the Wizards that season with 22.9 points per game and averaged 5.7 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 1.4 steals. During the season he also scored his 30,000th career point vs. Chicago on 1/4/02 and set the MCI Center record when he scored a season-high 51 points vs. Charlotte on 12/29/01. He also hit a buzzer-beater game-winning jumper at Cleveland on 1/31/02. MJ averaged 26 points per game at MCI Center but unfortunately missed 22 games including 12 following arthroscopic knee surgery on 2/27/02.

Michael Jordan's burning competitive desire to succeed motivated him to return once again as a basketball player, and turn the Wizards franchise around. Jordan began training, informing the media, at first, he was only doing it to lose weight. He worked himself into basketball shape during the summer by holding several invitation-only camps of pickup games with other NBA players at a Chicago gym. Jordan suffered three setbacks during his comeback summer workouts, raising questions as to whether his 38-year old body can endure a NBA 82 game schedule.

On September 25, 2001, Jordan added another chapter to what could have been the perfect ending in his storybook career. He announced that he would return to the NBA and play for the Washington Wizards on a two-year contract. "I am returning as a player to the game I love," said Jordan. "I am especially excited about the Washington Wizards, and I'm convinced we have the foundation on which to build a playoff-contention team." Ironically, Jordan achieved another moment in his spectacular career, scoring his 30,000th career point on January 4, 2002 against his former team, the Chicago Bulls. Unfortunately, Jordan was never able to lead his Wizards into the postseason as a player. He retired for a third and final time after playing his final game on April 16th, 2003. This time Michael Jordan left the game of basketball on his own terms. His comeback was to scratch an itch, and to teach the younger players how the game is played. He finished his career with 32,292 points, and a career average 30.12 ppg, the best in NBA history. Jordan has now officially passed the torch to the younger stars. "Now I can go home and feel at peace with the game of basketball," said Jordan.

At age 38 and 315 days, MJ shattered the record for the oldest player to score 50+. The game prior had MJ scoring just 6 due to injury which stopped his NBA-record double-figures scoring streak at 866 games. MJ came out to make up for that here. It should be mentioned that MJ's injury limited him to just 2 full-game scrimmages the entire year in practice. One must wonder, without the injury, what might have been possible at ages 38-40? Zone was allowed starting that year with hand-checking tighter than today as one-legged, twilight MJ broke a few records that day.
