Sari Ribbon yarn is made from the off cuts from the sari weaving/making industry in India. The offcuts are trucked to Nepal where the pieces are cut into ribbons of between 1 and 3 cms wide, then joined to make a skein of yarn. Because of the design of Saris and other garments worn in india, they generally have borders with rich brocaded patterns containing gold and silver threads, and you will find that many of the strips of ribbon in the yarn are embellished with brocade, making this a colourful and exotic yarn for knitting, weaving, dolls hair and clothes, and other fibre crafts.
These skeins are double the length of the others I have stocked before, and weigh in at between 90 and 100 grams Their length is approximately 35 to 40 metres, depending on how wide the ribbons strips are, and how heavily they are embellished. Because this is a handmade product, no two skeins are alike, and I cannot predict which colours will be in any particular skein, nor the order in which they will appear. Its totally random.
These skeins are produced by cottage industries in Nepal, where the
women workers are paid a fair wage for their labour and so contribute
to the economic welfare of their families.
You may notice a slight smell to this yarn, which disappears once
aired. This is in the nature of sari products and is not a fault.
