'Old Merchant House' dates from the 18th Century in the friendly village of Portsoy and is a well loved SPACIOUS 3 storey merchant house with a shady smugglers past!. Once owned by the famous smuggler Alexander 'Laird Brebner, this wonderful house if featured in many publications and in the local museum.

This spectacular coastal village nestles on the Moray Coast and is regarded as one of the prettiest along this stretch of coastline with stunning scenery and wildlife on your doorstep as well as it's own tiny beach area.

Portsoy is a perfect location for exploring the Moray Coast, down to Speyside, Royal Deeside, The Cairngorm National Park , Ski Resorts, Whisky & Castle trails, National Trust attractions, as well as many other places of local interest. The area has local fishing facilities, plentiful Golf Courses, and provides spectacular walks amid an amazing un-spoilt landscape. The locals are friendly, including the Moray Dolphins, which have been seen from 'Old Merchant House' windows on several occassions! Early Winter is a spectacular time of year to visit with the Cairgorm Mountains with snow peaks, as well as stunning sandy beaches all along this stretch of coastline. It is also a milder and drier/sunnier climate than the west coast, a fact not many people realise.

With a premier position on the Historic 17^th Century Portsoy Harbour front (see the red front doors), this self-catering accommodation has stunning un-interrupted sea views from all windows overlooking the harbour. The house still retains much of its original features with exposed beams, wooden floors and original sash windows and is located in a conservation area of natural beauty. This historic house is regularly featured in photographs and publications relating to Portsoy and the harbour and is featured as part of the exhibition in the Salmon Bothy Museum on the harbour front.

In the lounge area, there is a working wood burning stove and soft sofa's to enjoy those cosy nights by the fire, whilst listening and watching the waves lap in and out of the harbour, maybe after a hard days exploration. The dining area is at the front of the house with sea views. The three bedrooms all have period style shutters and offer stunning views across the harbour and out to sea. The main bedroom has a kingsize bed and has the original stone fireplace in the room, there is also a twin room with two single beds, plus a small double. The rustic kitchen has all modern appliances with plenty of storage and can also be used as an informal dining area.

Those staying  at Old Merchant House are able to wake up to the sound of the sea, sit up in bed, and look across the harbour as the sun rises, spectacular!

'Old Merchant House is within short walking distance of all local shops, restaurants, banks etc. as well as the local pub just a few yards accross the harbour, where you can enjoy a dram sitting outside in the sun or inside by the roaring wood burner. Also along the harbour front is the local marble shop which still polishes and sells local crafts. It is recorded that Portsoy Marble was in fact used in the building of the Palace of Versaille in France. There is also an award winning smoked salmon & wet fish shop on the opposite side of the harbour which receives the fresh catches every day for your supper.

We welcome well behaved dogs who are in doggie heaven with the beach and sea front walks directly outside. The is a small additional charge of £15 per booking.
