Scribbly Gum
Eucalyptus racemosa
syn Eucalyptus haemastoma
This tree is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.
Researching this tree has led me to believe that it has undergone several botanical revisions. Eucalyptus racemosa has two subspecies, that of racemosa and rossi. Eucalyptus racemosa ssp racemosa grows from Pokolbin, in the Hunter Valley down to Port Jackson while Eucalyptus racemosa ssp rossi grows from Goulburn, New South Wales to the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.
An evergreen tree growing to 15 metres (45ft) with an erect, branching trunk with a smooth bark of white, grey or yellow with 'scribbles'. The bark sheds in short ribbons while the scribbles are the result of insect larvae activity.
The leaves are narrow-lanceolate to lanceolate (ssp racemosa) to broadly lanceolate (ssp rossi), both leaf surfaces dull green (concolorous) to 15cm long. The flower buds are produced in groups of 11 and flowers are white or cream appearing in winter or spring.
Koalas favour the leaves as a food source and flying foxes collect nectar and pollen from the flowers.
The trees are referred to as Narrow-Leaved Scribbly gum (ssp racemosa) and Broad-Leaved Scribbly Gum (ssp rossi)
