Buying and selling vintage solid gold pocket watches E-Book 0n CD From 1 Nov to 11 Nov, 23 gold filled vintage pocket watches were listed on eBay as being solid gold. Of these watches all of them had a case made by one of two watch case companies. Five of these watch have sold for a price that reflects the buyer was bidding on what they assumed was a solid gold watch. Four of the buyers had a feed back score of less than 50 (newbies) These two brands account for the most of the gold filled cases that are most often mistaken for solid gold by both buyers and sellers. At least once a month I get a email from a seller telling me they have a sold gold watch case from one of these two companies that I say is gold filled. My reply is very simple, show me a affidavit from a disinterested party that the case has been tested per my instructions and that it tested as solid gold and I will eat my words. With this CD, hopefully you as a buyer or seller will make fewer costly mistakes. You will learn how to correctly identify the above two most common case brands, you will learn the only correct way to test any pocket watch case. plus you will learn some surprising facts about what could be sold legally in the united states a hundred years ago. The purpose of my research and time isn't to get rich, but the simple truth is I got sick and tired of gold filled watches selling on eBay as solid gold. If I have seen one watch listed as "tested for 14 kt" I've seen it a thousand times. Most modern Jewelers and sellers who test their own gold have not the slightest idea of how to test a vintage pocket watch case. Over 1/2 of the listed solid gold watches that are gold filled are listed by power sellers with sales over (1500) in most cases it is a honest mistake or the seller thinks the watch case is solid gold. I must admit that I was surprised of the number of power sellers selling watches that had very little knowledge of what they are selling Most experienced buyers know that 14k stamped in a pocket watch case can mean 14kt gold filed, 14 kt rolled gold plate, 14 kt solid gold and sometimes it means a crook bought a 14 kt stamp, experience is something you gain five minutes after you need it. This e-book will not make you a expert gold buyer but it will help you to avoid many of the pitfalls buying gold vintage pocket watches be it on eBay or a local yard sale. On eBay when you see "the case is stamped 14kt" the alarm bells should go off.. Some sellers will just just say the case is stamped 14kt and have a nice sharp photo of the stamped case. When you complain to eBay that the watch case is just gold filled this type of seller is off the hook as he didn't say the case was solid gold just that it was stamped 14kt. When a power seller lists a solid gold watch without a sharp photo or a good description of the gold hallmarks don't bid! why should you risk your funds by assuming the seller didn't make a mistake? Remember "warranted to assay" doesn't mean a thing unless there is a company name, logo or trademark stamped in the case. Many sellers claim that a 100 year old gold filled watch case has somehow morphed into solid gold by some magical means. "Case makers made a mistake and sold solid gold cases as gold filled", "The trademarks are wrong","The case tested 14kt" just a few remarks from adults who believe everything they see, adults that can not understand why a 14kt gold filled case will always test positive for 14kt gold. Most of the gold filled watches offered on eBay as solid gold have a few things in common. 1 Most cases were made were by one of two major cases makers 2 most cases are 8 size or smaller in mint or near mint condition 3 "not marked but tested solid gold" Companies that made solid gold cases were proud of them and always marked them. Some marks were small and over the years could wear off, even then using a good glass the faint mark can most often be found Free Tip
be very careful of American works in gold cases
made overseas, these cases most often are marked 18 and 14kt kt in truth 8-12 kt would be a honest assay for most. Many of these cases are pitted and stained, 14kt
solid gold doesn't pit, turn black, blue or green. Hall Marks (Crowns. flying fish or whatever were never put on Cases made in the U.S. to ID gold content Free Tip Their are no sold gold Boss cases, their are removable spacer rings rings in some Boss cases that are stamped 14kt. This CD is free with any purchase over $23.00 (my other items!) |
